I quickly tried to port this driver to GX2 with no success, so I stuck with older for the top dog. Maybe change to a Socket 7 mhz to be able to play some of these games. Is Ms-Dos actually a good environment to play early 3d games? But when additional rendering operations were added to the polygon load such as perspective-correction, Z-depth fogging, and bilinear filtering , rendering throughput dropped to the speed of software-based rendering on an entry-level CPU. And, despite its lackluster 3D-speed, the ViRGE did receive some S3D enhanced games, due in large part to the brand prestige S3 carried in this period: Grim Fandango suffers major FPS drop, but other results are in line with expected results. I can’t try it right now as I don’t have a computer available.

Also, if anyone needs it here is a “super uni driver”. Virg/egx2 Read Edit View history. Still with around 15 FPS at x resolution “decelerator” jokes cannot be stopped.
And, despite its lackluster 3D-speed, the ViRGE did receive some S3D enhanced games, due in large part to the brand prestige S3 carried in cirge/gx2 period: Even so GX2 stays quite cold just like other members of the family.
They weren’t very popular with gamers, becouse they were slow. Rebranded and reclassified into “business accelerator” Virtual Reality Graphics Engine stayed with us under a new name for few more years, polluting AGP slots of many unhappy gamers. I never heard of vvirge/gx2 game. However I don’t own them and cannot confirm their specification.
Grim Fandango suffers major FPS drop, but other results are in line with expected results. Was it not very popular back then?
S3 Virge GX2 – Graphics Cards – Tom’s Hardware
Sadly, these AGP Virges produces artifacts in s3d Terminal Velocity despite being supported through latest s3d toolkit. I can’t try it right now as I firge/gx2 have a computer available.
We cannot end this just yet, despite covering all the Virge cores. But we finally virge/g2 to speeds where we hit fps cap or vsync anyway.
virgs/gx2 I quickly tried to port this driver to GX2 with no success, so I stuck with older for the top dog. But to release one year after Voodoo Graphics chips with quarter performance and plagued by nasty old bugs is just sad.
I mean while first Virge is so slow, it was born in time of little standards, mild competition and unclear future of the whole 3D accelerator industry.
On top of my head I can only think of Battle Race which won’t run and Terminal Velocity which gives glitches. Other than that it provides much better frame rates than the other cards and thus can be considered the only card actually viable to play most of the S3D titles. It is quite a paradox, the most infamous 3D architecture holding a record in market longevity. With the “oversized texture without sufficient mipmaps” error finally solved, Virge does its usual quirks here too.

I personally cannot be so sarcastic about Virge, there is lots of effort behind every chip. Problems New chips, new driver releases. S3 Virge GX2 is actually one of the few S3 cards that will run S3 accelerated games at an actually decent framerate, so you have a pretty good find here.
For the looks is PCI but I’m not quite sure. The Techland library is using it too and Quake 2 have Z-fighting issues similar to first Virge. It was not so popular because other 3D cards were far more powerful at the time GX2 came out.

But there are games that only support the S3 Virge for 3D acceleration and GX2 runs them smooth unlike say the Virge which frequently got fps in 3D mode even on games supposedly made for itwith quite nice filtering, resolution and textures as you can see. Between its birth in and retirement near the yearthe ViRGE family received regular upgrades.
So if u want to enjoy early 3d gaming, imho get the virge and pair it up with a voodoo 1.
